We are renowned for the delivery of cutting edge, high quality, knowledge transfer to a wide range of participants. Our training courses very much fit in with our business aim to provide independent ‘evidence based’ guidance on the latest livestock research, development and technical innovation.

Our annual programme of short courses, ‘Feeding the Dairy Herd’, aims to provide a comprehensive knowledge of dairy herd nutrition based on the most recent research and information available.

Course Tutors

Julia Moorhouse, Head of Veterinary Services, Map of Ag

Julia qualified at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Science in 2000 and worked in mixed, mainly farm animal practice in the North of England for 13 years before joining Map of Ag (previously EBVC / Evidence Group). She holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and completed a MSc in Sustainable and Efficient Food Production at the University of Aberystwyth in 2019.

Julia’s role involves provision of technical advice relating to dairy herd health, welfare, nutrition and management to the dairy industry including processors, retailers and their producers. She also provides direct consultancy advice to dairy farms in the North of England.

Julia’s key areas of interest include feeding management, forage production and youngstock.

James Husband, Head of Livestock Development, Map of Ag

James qualified from vet school in 1993. He has 28 years of technical experience. This includes a certificate in Cattle Health & Production (RSVS 1998), a diploma in Cattle Health & Production (RCVS 2003), a diploma in Bovine Health & Management (ECBHM, 2006) before becoming specialist in Cattle Health & Production (RCVS, 2009).

James works for Map of Ag across both the business development team, working to understand industry needs, as well as the technical team, supporting and advising clients with the delivery of data and consulting projects to help meet their aims. James oversees many of the environmental sustainability projects day to day, in order to support the industry in understanding opportunities to improve on farm efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Richard Cooper, RCVS Specialist in Cattle Health and Production, Map of Ag

Richard Cooper qualified as a vet from Bristol in 2002, subsequently working in Devon and New Zealand. He undertook a farm animal residency at the University of Bristol in 2008, subsequently gaining his RCVS Diploma in Cattle Health and Production and RCVS Registered Specialist status.

Richard provides nutritional consultancy on behalf of Map of Ag to dairy and beef farmers, and veterinary consultancy to processors and retailers in the agrifood supply chain. He completed a master’s degree in Public Health and Epidemiology in 2017, which consolidated his love of using data to help inform farm decision making.

Alastair Hayton

Alastair Hayton BVM&S DCHP MRCVS is a Director of Synergy Farm Health a Veterinary Practice based in the southwest of England. His interests lie in all aspects of cattle health and productivity, and he combines his clinical work with consultancy and research.

Alastair holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeon’s Diploma in Cattle Health and Production and is a RCVS Recognised Specialist in this field. He is co-author of a book Practical Cattle Farming published by Crowood Press and co-editor of a book Dairy Herd Health (2012) published by CAB International.
